The USS
Arizona is the final resting place for many of the ship's 1177 crewmen who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. The 184-foot long Memorial structure spans the mid-section of the sunken battleship. Architect Alfred Preis's design concept of the memorial expressed his philosophical approach to the memorial's purpose. He meant for this design to be a reminder to American's of "...the inevitability of sustaining the initial defeat, of the potential for victory, and the sacrifices necessary to make the painful journey from defeat to victory. The overall effect is one of serenity. Overtones of sadnes have been omitted to permit the individual to contemplate his own personal responses...his innermost feelings."
