The USS
Arizona Memorial completed in 1962 proved to be as popular as predicted, surpassing expectations. It soon became evident that a shoreside facility was needed, not only for comfort and convenience, but to provide a place to present a historical perspective on the Pearl Harbor attack. On October 10, 1980, the US Navy turned the newly constructed visitor center, a museum and theater complex, and the operation of the USS
Arizona Memorial over to the National Park Service. The USS
Arizona Memorial visitor center museum features photographs, artifacts, and exhibits that deal with the December 7 attack, the battleship USS
Arizona everday life of the ship's crew, and America's entry into World War II.
