Due to exposure to the elements, many marble sections of the original wall in the shrine room of the Memorial became badly stained, cracked and loose. Through the contributions of the AMVETS, a completely new replacement wall was constructed, installed and dedicated on April 4, 1984. This marble wall is inscribed with the name and rank of each of the 1,177 who perished aboard the USS
Arizona. Viewing this wall, with its silent roll call, gives one the chance to contemplate and ponder the meaning of the USS
Arizona Memorial.
