In serene tranquility, a short distance across the harbor from the visitor center, lies the reamins of the battleship USS
Arizona and the USS
Arizona Memorial. The USS
Arizona Memorial stands proudly over the sunken battleship USS
Arizona and consists of a gleaming white 184-foot long concrete structure which varies in width from 27 feet at the center to 36 feet at the end, and was designed by architect Alfred Preis. Preparation for the Memorial began in early 1960 and after an estimated cost of more than $500,000, the Memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day 1962. The Memorial and Visitor Center is managed and operated by the National Park Service.
