Stricken from the Naval Register on December 1, 1942, the hulk of the USS
Arizona remains in approximately 40 feet of water and rests in 20 feet of mud, a watery grave for those killed aboard the ship. Although no longer in commission, the national ensign is raised and lowered on a daily basis over the USS
Arizona. In early March of 1950, Admiral Arthur Radford, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet, ordered the installation of a flagstaff on the protruding base of the
Arizona's main mast.
