PHOTO: December 2000 AMMA Calendar, by David Thoresen
Stricken from the Naval Register on December 1, 1942, the hulk of the USS Arizona remains in approximately 40 feet of water and rests in 20 feet of mud, a watery grave for those killed aboard the ship. Although no longer in commission, the national ensign is raised and lowered on a daily basis over the USS Arizona. In early March of 1950, Admiral Arthur Radford, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet, ordered the installation of a flagstaff on the protruding base of the Arizona's main mast.
