USS Arizona Survivor Glenn Harvey Lane passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 10, 2011, with his wife Abbe at his hospital bedside in Skagit Valley, Washington, between Seattle and Bellingham.

Lane, 93, an Oak Harbor, Washington resident was one of 18 survivors from the ship still living on Dec. 7, 2011, the 70th anniversary of the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

His daughter Patricia Anderson says, "Glenn and his wife, Abbe, were planning to go to Hawaii for the 70th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack but had to cancel a couple weeks ago because they felt that Glenn was not really up to traveling that far."

Lane was admitted to Skagit Valley Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Washington on Tuesday, Dec. 6, suffering from what was determined to be chronic renal failure and pneumonia, and his condition declined from there.

Anderson said, "I know he was really po'd that he was unable to go to Hawaii with his buddies for this special event."

Anderson recalls: "I have met all of them in the several times me and Dad took trips together in recent years for USS Arizona reunions.  Feels weird not to be a part of it."

Lane was a Radioman 3rd Class aboard the Arizona, flying second-seat in the Vought Kinfisher two-man seaplanes that were launched from catapults on the two aft gun turrets and recovered with hooks after they landed on their pontoons.

On the morning of Dec. 7, Lane was aboard the Arizona when the attack began. While he and fellow survivors Ed Wentzlaff, Martin Bruns and Milton hurst were trying to put out a fire, Lane was blown off the Arizona by an explosion.  He wound up in the water and swam to the gangway of the USS Nevada, which was the only battleship able to get underway. While under attack, the Nevada was beached to keep the harbor passage open.

Lane often remarked about perhaps being the only guy to have had two battleships taken out from under him.
