(This obituary is a good example of a common problem we still encounter. To the best of our knowledge, Admiral Eckhoff was not on the Arizona at the time of the attack nor does he appear on any subsequent survivor rolls for the Arizona. We have a saying that if everyone who is associated with being on the Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor was actually on the ship, it would have sunk on its own under the weight of all the sailors onboard. Unfortunately, over the years, family members know their loved ones either were KIA at Pearl Harbor or survived the attack but don't know that ships other than the Arizona were heavily damaged and/or sunk, so it is a common mistake to assume they were on the Arizona.)
