Jared and Emilia ~ USS Arizona Project

Jared, 15, and Emilia, 14, attend Ripley High School in Ripley, West Virgina. They were doing a project for history to enter in the county competition. They won the right to compete in the State competition and on May 10th were awarded 2nd Place for their USS Arizona Project.

Emilia emailed the following description of the project with the pictures:

Mr. Nease,

I thought maybe I should tell you a little more about our presentation since the picture of our display had a good bit of glare on it.

As you can see, we dress the part. We have a recording of the actual USS Arizona's bell playing quietly in the background as we give our speech (which is just under 5 minutes). We then answers any questions.

Here is some of what is set out with the display:

  • a Pearl Harbor series GI Joe (Navy) with his gun (my Dad bought for me)
  • a small photo album with photos my Grandma and I took while visiting the memorial
  • an old newspaper (It's actually a souvenir paper from 1 year after the attack. It belongs to Jared's Grandma and is dated 1942.)
  • Mr. Stratton's email in a folder
  • a model of the ship (Jared put together)
  • and an abstract (required) stating our purpose, conclusion, and all of our reference materials

Some of what is on the board:
  • your poem
  • before, during and after photos of the Arizona
  • photos of the oil leaking, the wall of names, and the small camera used to survey the damage
  • and maps of Pearl Harbor
Now maybe you can tell a little better what it looks like.
Bye for now! Emilia
