The 1940 census, dated April 27, shows Howard living in rural North Dakota, possibly a boarding house, in Grand Forks County where he was working as a bell boy at a nearby hotel. The census also shows he is no longer in school having completed 4 years of high school (he graduated from Central High School in 1939).
